CoMO's Commitment to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development

Ggs

The Confederation of Meningitis Organisation is committed to helping achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

In September 2015, 193 world leaders decided on 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. These goals aim to end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Below are the 3 goals which are most relevant to the work of CoMO.

Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Meningitis kills roughly 1.2 million people annually worldwide. Infants and children under five years old and adolescents between 15 and 19 years of age are most at risk. But anyone in the world can get meningitis at any time.

CoMO aims to reduce the incidence and impact of meningitis cases worldwide through:

  • Raising public awareness of meningitis and its symptoms through education: Many people don’t know the warning signs or that many types of meningitis are vaccine-preventable. CoMO is responsible for World Meningitis Day, held on the 24th April each year. This is the opportunity for people all over the world to remember patient stories, raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease and encourage vaccination to prevent further cases. Throughout the year, we encourage our members to actively use social media and hold events to increase public awareness.
  • Advocating for meningitis vaccines to be available to families worldwide: Meningitis is an important global health issue that should be on every government’s agenda. Cases are more frequent in developing countries due to poverty, overcrowding and lack of access to vaccines. CoMO coordinates international advocacy campaigns to raise awareness of meningitis, lobby for policy change and fight for global prevention and treatment.

Goal 10: Reduce Inequalities worldwide Meningitis affects people of all ages and from all countries

CoMO’s Life Course Immunisation Initiative specifically works to ensure that vaccines are made available to people of all ages. We host strategy workshops, policy forums and parliamentary meetings to bring about change in the global immunisation policy, extending immunisation to older people.

Goal 17: Global partnership for sustainable development

CoMO connects and resources a strong global network of members from over 25 countries. Our members include patient groups, health professionals and organisations, meningitis survivors and families committed to the prevention of meningitis. We speak on behalf of a significant global community of our members– one voice, one message. Together, we can’t be ignored. CoMO supports global partnership by:

  • Hosting conferences for members from each region to come together and share ideas at regional and global conferences.
  • Identifying existing organisations with potential to become CoMO members and helping to establish new organisations in areas where none exist.
  • Providing tools, networks and support to assist our members to demonstrate the impact that meningitis has on a personal and global level, and that support their local efforts to raise awareness of the disease and advocate for prevention in their country/region.
