Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030
“This roadmap is the embodiment of the ambition of people and families affected around the world who have called for its creation. It's their experience and passion that has driven a whole community of interest to get this far. We celebrate together the common goal of defeating meningitis and will be led by their inspiration to make it happen.”
In September 2021, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and partners launched the Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030. The global strategy is the first of its kind for meningitis, and sets out three visionary goals:
-
Eliminate epidemics of bacterial meningitis
-
Reduce cases of vaccine preventable bacterial meningitis by 50% and deaths by 70%
-
Reduce disability and improve quality of life after meningitis of any cause
To achieve these ambitious goals, the Road Map sets out to improve disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, monitoring, health advocacy, support and aftercare. Success relies upon the collective action of scientists, patient groups, governments, implementing organisations and individuals.

Member of the CoMO Network, Dr Rawal, speaking at the WHO launch of the Defeating Meningitis by 2030 Road Map
'I’m thrilled as the World Health Organisation has unveiled the Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030, a challenging but attainable goal. We’ll need passionate and sustained leadership. We’ll require support and resources, from healthcare and philanthropic organisations, policymakers, meningitis advocates, and many others. Together, we can implement the Road Map to save millions of lives by 2030.'
MRF Ambassador, Mr Davies, speaking at the WHO launch of the Defeating Meningitis by 2030 Road Map
'You can see the importance of the Global Road Map in advocating support and care for people affected by meningitis. Post meningitis, I made it through physical and psychological hard work, talking, counselling and little victories such as feeding myself, dressing or catching a bus. From abject depression right through to acceptance.”
“But thankfully, we now have the global Road Map, and with its implementation we can hope the future will be easier for those who are dealing with meningitis.'
